Our beliefs

What we believe has a profound influence on our experience in the world. For some, when they hear the word belief, they think of their faith. For others, it’s what they believe to be true about the world with other frameworks. When I bring up beliefs in session, I mean what we believe about ourselves and the environment that we live in. If we believe, for example, that we are being buffeted by forces outside of our control and have no influence or agency, we will examine those beliefs and determine if they are backed up by evidence. I use the word evidence intentionally since I don’t think that it is helpful to challenge a negative belief about ourself with a thought that is untrue. When we have a perspective about ourself and the world that is based on evidence, we can feel more confident in our understanding of ourselves. It can be a guide to find the path of peace with ourselves and our circumstances and to take it a step further, determine where and how we would like to make positive change.
