Social Circle

Humans are social beings. Our mental wellness is tied in part to healthy social contact with others. There are so many reasons why people either withdraw from or cut off contact with others and part of therapy is to examine not only if, but why and when to cease contact with people.

With that though, if we do cease contact with people whose presence is detrimental, we should consider the impact to our circle and how we can preserve and promote regular contact with healthy people. I frequently work with people who have altered their circle and consider ways to expand and nurture their relationships. I have found that it is often difficult to connect with others as an adult, especially if you work from home or do work that does not bring you into contact with people.

Despite the challenges to make connections with others, there are plenty of ways to find opportunities to do so. It can be hard, because there is often an element of risk to “putting yourself out there”. I encourage you to not let those challenges stop you. Having healthy people in our lives to share our experiences with and create community adds a richness and quality to our experience in the world that we would never be able to feel by ourselves.
